چکیده

We investigate the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric, perfect fluid with equation of state P = (Γ − 1)ρ. We restrict attention to the ultrarelativistic (“kinetic-energy-dominated”, “scale-free”) limit where black hole formation is anticipated to turn on at infinitesimal black hole mass (Type II behavior). Critical solutions (those which sit at the threshold of black hole formation in parametrized families of collapse) are found by solving the system of ODEs which result from a self-similar ansatz, and by solving the full Einstein/fluid PDEs in spherical symmetry. These latter PDE solutions (“simulations”) extend the pioneering work of Evans and Coleman (Γ = 4/3) and verify that the continuously self-similar solutions previously found by Maison and Hara et al for 1.05 ≤ Γ . 1.89 are (locally) unique critical solutions. In addition, we find strong evidence that globally regular critical solutions do exist for 1.89 . Γ ≤ 2, that the sonic point for Γdn ' 1.8896244 is a degenerate node, and that the sonic points for Γ > Γdn are nodal points, rather than focal points as previously reported. We also find a critical solution for Γ = 2, and present evidence that it is continuously self-similar and Type II. Mass-scaling exponents for all of the critical solutions are calculated by evolving near-critical initial data, with results which confirm and extend previous calculations based on linear perturbation theory. Finally, we comment on critical solutions generated with an ideal-gas equation of state. PACS numbers: 04.20.Dw,04.25.Dm,04.40.Nr,04.70.Bw,02.60.-x,02.60.Cb Submitted to: Class. Quantum Grav.

Critical phenomena at perfect and non-perfect surfaces

In the past perfect surfaces have been shown to yield a local critical behaviour that differs from the bulk critical behaviour. On the other hand surface defects, whether they are of natural origin or created artificially, are known to modify local quantities. It is therefore important to clarify whether these defects are relevant or irrelevant for the surface critical behaviour. The purpose of...

On Asymmetry in Biology and Nature

Symmetry has attracted a substantial amount of effort because considerable simplifications are possible in the mathematical and physical treatment of phenomena and natural systems that possess a certain degree of symmetry. Among physical and chemical systems the most widely known are those related to crystals and fluids. Whereas crystals have a lattice structure and a symmetry caused by ‘perfec...

Scaling-violation phenomena and fractality in the human posture control systems.

By analyzing the movements of quiet standing persons by means of wavelet statistics, we observe multiple scaling regions in the underlying body dynamics. The use of the wavelet-variance function opens the possibility to relate scaling violations to different modes of posture control. We show that scaling behavior becomes close to perfect, when correctional movements are dominated by the vestibu...

Nonuniversal routes to universality: critical phenomena in colloidal dispersions.

We investigate critical phenomena in colloids by means of the renormalization-group based hierarchical reference theory of fluids. We focus on three experimentally relevant model systems: namely, the Asakura-Oosawa model of a colloidal dispersion under the influence of polymer-induced attractive depletion forces; fluids with competing short-range attractive and longer-range repulsive interactio...

Introduction to Schramm-Loewner evolution and its application to critical systems

In this short review we look at recent advances in Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) theory and its application to critical phenomena. The application of SLE goes beyond critical systems to other time dependent, scale invariant phenomena such as turbulence, sand-piles and watersheds. Through the use of SLE, the evolution of conformally invariant paths on the complex plane can be followed; hence a...
